SummaryClinical andpost‐mortemspecimens from intestines, lower respiratory tract, joints and some other normally sterile sites were submitted for routine diagnostic bacteriology and examined for the presence of antibiotic residues. Half of the samples from pigs and cattle and the majority of the samples from horses and dogs contained antibiotics. Pathogenic bacteria were isolated from 48% of the antibiotic‐positive and from 49% of the antibiotic‐negative cases.
