Both conceptual and technical knowledge is adequate to make hopes for gene transplantation therapy realistic. But we must still fulfill four criteria: matching disease and gene, devising means for multiplying that gene, introducing copies of the gene into the patient's genome, and guiding the“treated”genome into appropriate cells. There has been major progress in solving all four problems.
