Tubificoides vestibulatussp n. is described from off Pesaro and Bari on the Adriatic of Italy. It is characterized by the possession of: (1) a dense cover of papillae on postclitellar segments; (2) bifid setae (2–4 per bundle anteriorly, 1 per bundle posteriorly), in material from Pesaro (Northern Adriatic) each posterior dorsal bifid seta was often accompanied by one very short, thin single‐pointed needle seta; (3) roundish, poorly cuticularized penis; and (4) an elaborate distension (vestibule) of the ectal part of each sper‐mathecal duct.Tubificoides vestibulatusis the first species ofTubificoidesLastockin described from the Mediterranean Sea.
