Although diagnosis of polycythemia is not difficult in advanced disease, an elevated hematocrit or hemoglobin may be the only clue in early stages. An understanding of the physiologic mechanisms of the various forms of the disorder can help determine whether the patient does or does not have polycythemia and whether it is primary, secondary, or relative.
