Use of either birthweight alone or length of pregnancy alone as a criterion for determining the adequacy of intrauterine development obscures the fact that low-birthweight babies are not a homogeneous group but may vary greatly in their needs and prognoses. A new classification system that takes both factors into account is proposed as a guide to determining the special approach many of these infants require.
