A series of propensity rules for orientation and alignment in electron-atom and ion/atom-atom collisions is presented. The current understanding of the origin and the range of validity of these rules is investigated. It is shown how such an analysis may yield deeper insight into the collision dynamics responsible for electronic excitation and transfer in atomic collision processes. ©1999 American Institute of Physics.
