An experiment is described in which students observe the well-known Rossi shower (or transition) curve. A simple theory is presented which is appropriate only to the knowledge gained from this single experiment. Students are able to interpret their experimental results in terms of this theory in a way that indicates the existence in the cosmic radiation of a hard and a soft component, and they are able to calculate values of several of the parameters which are introduced in the theory.
