Parasitism of tomato crops byOrobanche ramosacauses severe loss in Lebanon. Control methods have so far not proved successful. One hundred and eight tomato cultivars weré tested in pot trials for tolerance toOrobanche. Eight were slightly tolerant and eight more were only, slightly susceptible. The synthetic germination stimulants GR 7, 28, 41, 45 and 53 were tested onOrobancheseeds on filter paper discs. All gave the best results at 12 days after treatment, GR 7 at 10 ppm and the others at 0.1–1.0 ppm. All gave poor results at 100 ppm. GR 7 was used as a soil drench treatment forOrobancheonce and three times at weekly intervals at 1.0 ppm in pot trials, and tomatoes were transplanted into pots from one to six weeks after treatment. The best results were obtained with three weekly treatments with a six week period before transplanting the tomatoes.
