How should severe uncontrolled hemorrhage be managed at the prehospital stage and in the emergency room? New experimental models which simulate uncontrolled blood loss have been developed to examine the impact of therapeutic strategies. Recent research on mechanisms and mediators is reviewed and clinical trials on current therapeutic concepts are discussed.
