Clinical presentation, site of the lesions, etiology and pathogenesis, and prognosis are all highly variable across the broad spectrum of renal cystic diseases. Perhaps the most significant addition to our recent knowledge is recognition of the genetic nature of many of these entities. This appreciation makes genetic counseling one of the most important aspects of clinical management.
