A number of new biomaterials are being investigated with respect to their use in wound healing. Currently, 2 of the most active areas of research involve collagen-based skin substitutes and hyaluronic acid derivatives. Progress with these approaches in wound repair and reconstructive surgery was discussed at the 5th Annual Meeting of the European Tissue Repair Society [Padua, Italy; August/September 1995].
