Children with recurrent or persistent otitis media in early childhood may be at increased risk for language and related learning handicaps. Much of the literature dealing with this topic has limitations. Additional study is recommended since changes in therapy or prophylaxis of both otitis and hearing deficits may have major effects on cognitive and emotional development.
