For many years society viewed the spinal cord injured person as an asexual being. Within the past 10 years health care providers have recognized the need to incorporate information on sexuality into the care of this population. This article reviews the physiologic and psychologic changes experienced by the spinal cord injured person, explores methods of enhancing the physiologic function inherent in the sexual experience, and presents nursing's role in sexual counseling.
