Arginine evokes release of pituitary growth hormone in both pregnant and nonpregnant women. This study shows that such growthhormone response is independent of plasmaglucose concentration. The data also suggest that separate mechanisms may exist for the release of growth hormone in response to hypoglycemia and to amino acid infusion, implying that the hormone may have a different physiologic role in each circumstance.
