Judged by growth of organisms in cultures, nearly all of 100 parturients had six different types of vaginal bacteria. The bacterial content of the vagina did not increase during labor, in spite of vaginal or rectal examinations (kept to a minimum for this investigation). Patients whose vagina harbored pathogenic bacteria did not necessarily experience clinical infection postpartum.
