AbstractStrategic partnerships and alliances perhaps represent the greatest need but also the greatest challenge for SMEs and small countries, both in deciding which directions they wish to go in and finding suitable and willing partners. Here the strategic options are defined for firms and states as widely as possible. These issues are examined in the Irish context and the importance emphasised of an integrated, coherent, innovation-led approach to the overall management of the internationalisation process.
