Children must undergo painful medical procedures in the treatment of many acute or chronic illnesses. Fear and anxiety surrounding these painful procedures may create significant stress for the child and family. This paper reviews current approaches used by health care professionals to help children cope with these medical procedures. In addition, considerations for using these strategies and suggestions for intervention are presented to help the pediatric nurse develop a plan of care for these patients.
