The close‐coupling method of treating ion‐atom collisions is reviewed and evaluated in terms of the limitations. A new AO‐MO matching method which can be easily generalized to collisions involving multi‐electron systems is described. It is suggested that in the inner region the adiabatic MO approach is replaced by diabatic‐by‐sector MO basis functions. ©1996 American Institute of Physics.
