Improving student awareness of the utility of mathematics

Recognizing the necessity of making students more aware of the usefulness of their mathematical knowledge and better able to apply it, an approach toward these goals encompassing four objectives was developed. The approach seeks to stimulate interest in mathematics by enabling the student to use his knowledge in a non‐trivial application while discovering for himself the ideas that gave rise to the concept employed. An example of how the approach was implemented is presented with an assessment of the results as measured by student reactions.
