摘要:

Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is a devastating lethal disease that has been of great concern to many health care professionals. Issues regarding the protection of both patient and nurse from infection and the AIDS agent have been of great concern. Since this disease spreads through contamination by blood and body secretions, the I.V. nurse specialist is confronted with a challenge to protect him/herself as well as the patient from exogenous infection. With fairly simple precautions, there is little danger to health care professionals; however, established procedures and training are necessary. We have treated over 50 adult and pediatric AIDS patients in the home setting in the last year. Home care protocols have been developed which are effective in protecting patient, family and staff without dehumanizing care. These protocols include delivery of equipment, return of equipment, care of the patient and the home setting, as well as waste disposal.
