An almost fortuitous discovery of a close association between a familial subtype of malignant melanoma and the dysplastic nevus syndrome not only has facilitated early diagnosis and cure of some melanomas but has provided oncologists with a highly useful and observable human model for studying evolution of malignant diseases from premalignant precursors.
