AbstractIsrael has conducted a good deal of research into cultivation of desert regions and the experience gained could be of great benefit in Africa. The aim has been to improve the soil fertility by careful use of irrigation and fertilizer application, to breed and introduce plants that are tolerant to dry conditions and thus to improve the standard of living of the inhabitants of the arid areas. Many of the techniques have had remarkable success including drip irrigation which has improved food production so that it is above the national average.With careful adaptation to local conditions these techniques could be used in other similar drought conditions.
