Inappropriate prescribing by physicians and the inaccurate use of medications by patients result in substantial medical expenditure worldwide. At the 13th International Conference on Pharmacoepidemiology [Florida, US; August 1997], several studies were presented which dealt with factors influencing patient compliance in the treatment of hypertension, and the appropriate use of inhaled corticosteroids in patients with asthma.
