The first of these two articles on nuclear magnetic resonance explains the principles. The energy states of nuclei in magnetic fields are considered, and the resonance conditions are discussed, together with the interaction of the spin system with electromagnetic radiation. Nuclear resonance signals from the solid state are described; the reduction of line width by rotation of the crystal or molecule is then considered, as an introduction to measurements in the liquid state.
