Methodological difficulties encountered in preparing the new checklist and the new red list of the 279 liverworts and hornworts existing currently in Italy are explained. Special difficulties for their observation and collection in the field and for their identification are detailed. The main obstacles to a better knowledge of the Italian hepaticological flora are discussed. A synthetic view of the threatened species is given, drawing attention to the special importance of Italy for the protection of many species at the European level.
