The associations of human diseases and particular HLA types have gone through a series of refinements as the nature of the major histocompatibility gene complex and its products has become better known. We have reached a point at which we can foresee the possibility of applying this knowledge in prevention and even treatment of such autoimmune conditions as Graves' disease and type I diabetes.
