The near ultraviolet absorption spectra of α-bromo- and β-chloronaphthalene have been photographed and analyzed. Both the molecules give rise to two systems of discrete absorption. In system I ofα-bromonaphthalene the analogues of both agand blg- type frequencies of naphthalene have been observed, the latter appearing more strongly than the former. In system II of the compound on the other hand, the analogues of ag-type vibrations are prominent in comparison to their counterparts in system I. In the case of β-enloronaphthalene, however, the analogues of ag-type frequencies are prominent as expected theoretically.
