AbstractVarious combinations of base and subtense angle are employed in indirect distance measurement. A new device is described which is attached to a theodolite, enabling it to function as a rangefinder. The advantages of a rangefinder are retained, without the necessity for a specialised instrument. There are applications in surveys normally performed by tacheometry and in surveying inaccessible sites which often occur in engineering and mining surveys.
