Numerical investigations on the interactions of pressure waves with flames demonstrate that the pulsating instability can be excited by sharp changes in pressure. It is found that the frequency of oscillation is significantly altered by the amplitude of the pressure step but that the classical stability boundary is only slightly changed. The response to different types of input is evaluated.
