On the occasion of his sixtieth birthday, two colleagues review V. M. Kotlyakov's contribution to glaciology. They stress not only his formidable level of activity as a researcher, but his major contribution to the promoting of glaciology and geography at both the national and international level, and to popularizing glaciology.
