AbstractBecause it is essentially urban based, the press in Asia has often been taxed with suffering from a lack of relevance to the needs of rural development. To combat this tendency, one of India's largest English language dailies, theHindustan Times, which is published from Delhi and distributed in the north-west of the country, launched an experiment eight years ago in spotlighting the people, problems, and prospects of a small village, week after week. The man who conceived the project is B George Verghese, the paper's former editor and winner of the 1975 Filipino Magsaysay Award for community development activities in Asia. In the following article condensed fromMedia Asiaand published by courtesy of the Asian Mass Communication Research and Information Centre, Singapore, he tells the story behind this experiment.
