An ongoing study is described that seeks to evaluate the role of steroid therapy in the management of alcoholic hepatitis; it is being conducted in patients classified as severely ill by the criterion of spontaneous encephalopathy. While it would be premature to offer conclusions, there does seem to be a trend toward improved survival in the steroid group. Other aspects of overall management are detailed.
