Although known as a clinical entity for only about a decade, the sick sinus syndrome is emerging as a significant cause of cardiac morbidity and mortality, responsible for placement of an estimated half of the 60,000 new pacemakers installed each year. The pathophysiology of the various causes of the syndrome is reviewed, as are its natural history, diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment.
