When long-term dialysis failed as a method of treating uremia in diabetics, transplantation was undertaken as a last-ditch alternative, and although results are less satisfactory than in nondiabetics, approximately three fourths of those so treated have been salvaged. About two thirds have been totally rehabilitated; eyesight has generally been stabilized and neuropathy and other diabetic complications have improved.
