Rare anaphases showing 49 (7n) and 21 chromosomes (3n) and the segregation of the latter into sets of 14 and 7 illustrated in diploid roots ofP. sativumsuggest that the entire mitotic complement need not always act as a single unit in replication. Asynchronous chromosomal replication may be responsible for such peculiar segregations.
