A young adult in seemingly good health can rapidly become the victim of multiple sclerosis. This disease of the central nervous system can produce chronic neurological disability. Recent research has shown that a short course of I.V. cyclophosphamide and adrenocorticotropin hormone can result in a temporary stabilization of symptoms in patients with chronic progressive multiple sclerosis. Because of the immunosuppression and drug side effects, as well as the physical and emotional needs, these patients present a unique challenge to I.V. nurses as well as the general nursing staff.
