The value of this ultrasound technique in terms of its safety, its ease of use, and its yield in diagnostic information is discussed, with emphasis on its role in providing etiologic differentiation in mitral valve disease and cardiac enlargement. In addition, echocardiograms have revealed an unexpectedly common occurrence of idiopathic hypertrophic subaortic stenosis.
