Evidence that viruses cause cancer in animals is ample, but until recently the connection in human medicine remained tenuous. Identification of human T-cell leukemia-lymphoma virus offers the clearest view to date of the role played by a virus in the etiology of human cancer: It may induce malignancy by activating homologous cellular genes following integration with host-cell DNA.
