摘要:

SummaryIn order to impress upon students that they KEEP THEIR OPTIONS OPEN, the mathematics department of Georgia Southern College, during the spring quarter of 1981, sent one of its faculty members into the field. This field experience brought the faculty member into contact with 2163 high school students through visits to fifteen different schools. As motivation for the students, the MAA brochure“MATH in HIGH SCHOOL…”was presented to each student. The total cost of the project (not including course load reduction) was $215.Over all, I felt that the venture was extremely worthwhile both to me and to the schools visited. There is, of course, no way at this time to determine how effective these visits were with impressing students that they should continue their mathematics studies. However, teachers, counselors, principals, school superintendents, curriculum directors, and students all expressed feelings that this had been a worthwhile experience and several school systems have already asked that we make this an annual event.
