Earlier this year, investigators from the Mayo Clinic and Mayo Foundation in the US found a link between concomitant use of fenfluramine and phentermine, and valvular heart disease. This followed hot on the heels of news of a link between fenfluramines and primary pulmonary hypertension. A similar link was found with the anorectic agent aminorex almost 3 decades ago and led to market withdrawal of the agent. Despite this disturbing trend, many investigators maintain that the benefits of anorectic agents outweigh the potential risks; however, others disagree.
