The advent of thrombolytic therapy has increased the importance of and the need for precise etiologic and nosologic diagnosis in myocardial infarction. Patients who stand to benefit most from thrombolytic agents are those with large transmural, or Q-wave, infarctions in an anterior location. Thus, identification of the extent and site of the infarction takes on a new urgency.
