SUMMARYThe potential use of certain metabolites and pigments in the classification of species in the genusNectriawas studied. Eleven species ofNectriawere used:N. aquifolii, N. cinnabarina, N. coryli, N. gliocladioides, N. peziza, N. ochroleuea, N. sporangiicola, N. candicans, N. episphaeria, N. lacteaandN. purtonii. Two to four compounds were obtained from all but the last five species. The substances were unique to one species but some species appeared to have a chromophore in common. Preliminary separation and characterization of these compounds was achieved by countercurrent distribution and visible and UV spectrophotometry.
