It is now possible to evaluate by either of two tests for pulmonary surfactant the degree of maturity of the fetal lung and thereby to identify fetuses at risk of RDS. How soon will the clinician be able to act on this information? There is evidence from animal studies that certain agents, given prenatally at a critical gestational age, can accelerate either release or synthesis of surfactant and thus diminish RDS incidence.
