Infrared Circular Dichroism of Liquid Crystals

A measurement system for infrared circular dichroism (IRCD) was constructed by using a home-made CD measuring attachment and a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, and some tentative evaluations of its performances were made. IRCD spectra were measured for nematic liquid crystals such as 4-cyano-4-n-pentyl biphenyl (K-15) which exhibited optical activity caused by the effect of surface-induced orientation and/or by doping with a small amount of chiral guest molecules, and these spectra were compared with each other. It was found that the IRCD spectra of K-15 without chiral guest molecules showed opposite signs depending on the configurations of the two rubbed windows on which polyimide was coated. IRCD spectra of K-15 could be also measured without chiral guest molecules and rubbing procedures, when two NaCl windows were coated with poly-γ-methyl-L-glutamate.
