Among the functions intended for SPINE is the definition of the problems in the field of spine surgery. The Presidential Address delivered by Robert B. Winter, MD to the Scollosis Research Society in 1974 traces the development of successful methods of treatment for genetic scollosis and depicts the current state of the art. However, Dr. Winter shows that substantial deficits exist in the general application of the knowledge at hand, and large numbers of questions remain unanswered, even today. While his challenge is given to the members of that Society specifically, his arguments should be the proper concern of all involved in the management of spine deformity.—HL
