A highly selective approach is called for, since the main problem in anemia is to establish the underlying condition of which it is a symptom. If this task can be carried out in the office, hospitalization may not be needed. But because anemia is never a trivial symptom, hospitalization may be indicated for its full investigation as well as for treatment of specific complications and advanced disease.
