D7 is a unique instrument. Using scattering of spin polarized neutrons with polarization analysis, it is possible to separate the coherent, incoherent, and magnetic scattering in the same experiment. No less importantly, the internal calibration yields the absolute cross sections; the essential information for quantitative data treatment and comparison of experimental results with theoretical models. The use of a multidetector arrangement results in a significant increase in counting rate compared to triple-axis instruments where polarization analysis can also be performed.
