The difficulties of teaching electromagnetic field theory to electrical engineers are well recognised, and are increased by modern course requirements. It is suggested that the ‘Maxwell’ equations are unnecessary, together with the concepts of flux on which they are founded, and that a fresh look is needed at what is meant by magnetic and electric ‘fields’. Maxwell himself pointed the way.
