The factors that influence the ability of the adolescent to participate in his own health care are discussed. The use of nursing process in including adolescents is built on Dorothea Orem's concept of self-care. Traditional developmental theorists are considered in explaining social and intellectual competence. Potential and limitation in assuming self-care are discussed. The article concludes with a variety of suggestions for planning adolescent care that is developmentally appropriate and sensitive to the needs of individual adolescents.
