Many therapeutic modalities are now available that can not only reduce mortality among high-risk neonates, especially the premature, but diminish the threat of lasting neurologic damage among those who survive. These resources can be applied most effectively through the newborn special or intensive care unit. A facility is described that can meet this need when the anticipated patient load is relatively small.
